A New Time

Back to work. Back to reality. It was nice being in la la land staying at home with the sweeest baby ever. It certainly is a catch 22 and for every woman it is different. I have friends that are stay at home mothers and then there are women like me and although I secretly wish I came into a lot of money so that going back was not a nessity, I am happy to go back. I need that adult interaction and the stimulation that my job brings. Don't get me wrong, Spring break is coming and so is summer and I am ready for that as well. And although my first few days back have been challenging and tiring I am looking forward to getting a routine down and for our lifes to continue to grow with laughter and love.

Some fun color to paste up here and for me to get off my desktop. This week will be spent with a baby on my breast but with the small windows of free time I have between picking up the other kiddos at school, I will be packing up the winter decorations and trying to minimize around here. I have a lot of s#!T! So more to etsy, more stored away and organized in the garage and in any free spots I can find in the house. But I am hoping to get organized enough to send some things back home with my mom to sit in her garage until she has a sale this spring. We will see if she will go for it!

One last surprise for 2011. This year has been insane for me. I just want to remind myself how much I have come from and am going into in the year 2012. From a divorce, a pretty intense accident,a surprise pregnancy, a huge move, a new job, a new life, and a new yet old love in my life. A breech baby boy and then the surprise of that baby boy I had been anticipating for 40 weeks was in fact a lovely little girl. Things have not slowed down one bit, but this is the time in my life that God I wish that they would. Ellen Margaret came to me December 12, at 9:19 am, and I am a better person already because of her.

I new look for a casual creation. I have made these woven necklaces before and my design had a more laid back feeling. Rope + Thread + Chain.... now moves to Thread + Chain + Sparkle. Love the gold dipped rope jewelry as well. I will be trying this out. Although I feel as of late that I should just find my niche and perfect it rather then jumping from idea to idea. So on the look out for much needed motivation and inspiration.

2. A sweet new piece of art to hang. I am running out of wall space but I think expanding on my art collection is important and when I do have a lack of space rotating art in and out will help keep the house fresh and art fulled all year long.
3. More vintage and new (Katy:) afgans for my collection, I love the way that they looked all folded and stacked and have a mini hissy fit when their order is messed up!

Ok I am offically obsesssed with Frankie magazine thanks to my sister. She sent two issues home with my parents when they were visiting her in Australia. I am in love. Serious Love... stay up late and look and google on the internet love. So far I have found out that Frankie Magazine as been around since October 2004, here is a little more info
Back when it all began, frankie magazine founders editor Louise Bannister and
creative director Lara Burke could think of nothing better than spending their
days op shopping and drinking cups of tea. (They still can’t – some things never
change.) One day, they put together a plan to start a magazine. They were uninspired
with what was being offered on newsagency shelves and felt nothing could relate to
them. Both firm friends with similar tastes, they wanted a magazine that spoke directly
to the reader, contained great affordable fashion, sweet art, interesting reads and
pretty photography. With the support and encouragement of youth lifestyle publishing
house Morrison Media, their dream became a reality. Three years later, when Louise
wanted to go off overseas on a big adventure, the duo called up their friend Jo Walker,
who had written for frankie from the first issue. Jo agreed to move back to Australia
and take over the tea-drinking duties from Louise. She is now editor and still works
with co-founder and creative director Lara Burke. Back from her overseas jaunt,
Louise now works on special frankie projects in the role of assistant publisher.
They all enjoy scones, crafting and mid-90s indie rock.

I was just in awe of the texture of the paper in the pages, thick and matte. The content of the articles, and most of all the quality of the pictures. Honestly you could and I will carefully cut out any given page in here and frame it and it would look like a million bucks. In each issue and there has been 43 so far there is a poster/print for your viewing pleasure. You could use it as wrapping paper, there is a printed calender on the back with two months on it, or seriously if you can get the folds out a framed print perfect for your space. I am on the search of back isssues and people selling these. The subcription for overseas is a whopping $115!! So sister if you are reading please keep an eye out for back issues there and for the new issues too. Your the best!

I guess I am one of those people that gets shit done. I hate sitting around when I know that there is something to be done and that needs to get done. Here is my venting post... I am sending it out into the cosmos in hopes that I can understand a little bit more about myself. I am a walking "catch 22" I am a busybody constantly walking around, or as my mom calls it "farting around" and just doing busy, little things. I will wipe down the whole kitchen before I know it. I will have the weeks laundry done on Wednesday night. Just randomly. Even at work, I have down time that I hate to waste and I carry a big bag of things I can do involving my art and craft. I knit as I walk the aisles at school. I hot glue on my lunch time when I am feeling not so social. It is a blessing and a curse. Something I extend myself so far that I am hardly pleasant to be around and what is worse is that I expect others to get shit done too. Don't get me wrong I can be damn lazy and I relish in having huge chunks of time that I can curl up and look at blogs, and inspirations from clippings and mags from around the house or just watch an old movie I have seen 100 times and eat bad food and just "veg" but of course that is after I have gotten shit done. I am not trying to toot my own horn or anything but on nights like tonight I just want to turn myself off and leave all the shit that needs to be done.... for whenever.

Such perfect colors and fun holiday ideas... all I need is a stamp, paint and canvas pillow covers... which I have! Whee. I want to do some chevron and or arrow covers. I think as gifts and in the etsy shop that they would do well. What are your holiday color palettes about? I tend to decorate with cheery, plum, bright green, and gold hues. I love bright colors as opposed to the traditional red and green.

Three pieces and yes in that order from different days, different people, and all give off different feelings. This piece above, hand embroidered for $1.50. Literally sitting in the grass in a pile of clothes. I think it was once a shirt/poncho and now it is mine... at first I grabbed it with all intentions of cutting it up and re-purposing it. But for now with fall in the air it is the perfect piece to fill the spot where the coat rack used to be. A simple tension rod and wah la, handmade native art.

The most expensive of the pieces of textile is from the local antique shop. I stopped there today because I saw a amazing map in the window, I rushed in and low and behold it was and is $325.oo... yikes. So I settled on this Granny square lap blanket. It is in such great shape, I scored and honestly it was behind the counter getting tagged when I came in and snagged it as soon as she put it out.

Now this really got me smiling today. I quick stop into the local Goodwill and this was there waiting for me. The perfect fall tapestry. It might have been a rug but I can't imagine putting this wool (yes wool!) handmade piece on the floor. I can't believe the handmade tassels on this. The yarn is a little warn but I am so in love with it and at $5.99 how could I not take it home?

Hudson Show

Was a success! It was so nice for a change to be outside (even though I got the sniffles) and to be only a few short miles away for a show. I think I went over board on the display but I just could not resist to take my days of being a visual display girl at Anthropologie and applying it here.

I got so many compliments, "Finally something unique!" I got the idea that I was the odd ball at this show. Many people had to say that they hadn't been to an art show in years because every booth was always the same stuff. In my opinion it was very different from a shows out west were you feel like one of many into a market where you are the one that sticks out.

I got card after card for boutiques, wholesalers, barn sales and invited to be in shows.

Lots of good connections made this week, lots of students face, and it felt good getting my name out there and nestling into my new community!

I did have the opportunity to get a dress, cardigan, and canvas tote, I am just kicking myself. I was afraid that they would not fit or something and thought I would come back and get them. Not so! The throw that they were selling at Target for 40 bucks was on ebay for 300! Vultures! I am hoping with my connections at Target that I will score again. I am very happy though that I got some ceramics as opposed to melamine. They are heavier and more durable and just look better and on my kitchen wall they just seem to fit, as well as the heavy duty ceramic bowls on my shelf.

I am so so thirsty! For pattern and color, I am dying for it. I love these images and find myself this fall drawn to mustard, dusty pinks, teal and neutrals. I can't wait to post and see how well these little feather pins I have made. They are made of linen. I got the inspiration from 100 layer cake blog in the do it yourself section. I love them and their ideas. I also got crafty at school today and used some left over tissue paper to make some very similar to confetti systems garland. Minus the 130 dollar price tag. I will post pics of those as well. I hope to finish the pins tomorrow in my down time. Rock on for energy, inspiration and fall!

Medications and Fashion

So much to do and see and get inspired by. Mainly why I write this blog is for me... obviously cause I don't think the 11 people who check this out from time to time really read it but hey thanks for joining, but I like to keep track of what I need to do when I want to do it. I have ADD, I have decided that myself or at least I do when it comes to arting and creating and getting all my ideas in order. Its hard and at times I feel lost and overwhelmed by things and projects I want to try and make and that I think I can make but never do, the list goes on and on. And when I do decide what makes the list and more often then not it is more then one thing, I start it... make one, and move on to the other idea I had. Often I have multiple piles of project around the house. It is a frustrating process. So in an attempt to cool things down a bit I post in here (along with 3 other paper journals) to try and keep all the ADD and flow of ideas in order and in some of the chaos comes things that end up being really successful and pieces that I am quite proud of. If not for this venue I would be on medication.

This night as I try to calm myself before the first week of school I am reflecting on the days where I was a completely new teacher. Not just in a new district, like I am now, but brand new to the whole thing. I so wanted everyone to like me and for Ms. W to be their favorite teacher. Now that I am in my forever place and back to Ms. G I am reminded of new starts and new feelings that one has when they are blissfully lost. I am so happy to be new again and learning new things and meeting new people. In a place where I can see myself for years to come. The storm is coming but I think it will be one of those lovely summer thunderstorms that I can enjoy.

Seriously? Free people?! I love your style, aesthetic, and feel. Flannel, sequins, tassels, ripped fabric... yep I say, YES! I love you and your ideas. I will do this in a few days time and I have all of this around the house... canvas, fabric up the wah zoo, hot glue, a sewing machine and I am just I would round up some glitter and glitz. Maybe I will have to submit these to the gallery here in town if they turn out the way I see them in my head. A Party, A Fall Sweater, and A place to have a lie down

Things are in full swing here and school, paperwork, school websites, and classrooms (little by little) are coming together. I have found some really good art connections here at my new home and have been excepted to two shows this fall. One in Maplegrove and one here in Hudson on the River in September! I am so thrilled. It will surly prove to be a challenge to start this new job, get involved in the two schools I am teaching at, and get my art life in order for two shows one right after the other. But I have had more difficult things happen. I am sure that all will fall into place. Like my mom says "It always does"

New fall scarfs for the Minzer line, wood and linen... soft and twisted. Layered or a single loop... I think that these will do well

I have found a new app love. Incredibooth, you can take photobooth shots, in four and in four different settings and you can save the whole strip or individual pics. I am in heaven with this one. I would say the only negative thing about it is that the photos snap so fast, I have found that I don't have time to get my props ready! Big glasses, flowers, angles etc... I have to practice more to perfect it.

Anthro Style on the Streets

Anthropologie had a great post today that showed their looks out on the streets. I love it. In starting a new job I am looking forward to the weather cooling down and actually getting to enjoy some winter and fall fashion, I am sure I will be complaining about it come December...Or March for that matter but none the less I am looking forward to big sweaters and boots. I have plans to try a beaded scarf piece today that was inspired by Anthro, I miss working there but it is nice to still get inspired by them and they certainly delivered today. Viva la Anthro!

Antlers a life long obsession

So every since I can remember, bones have always fascinated me, I mean my second great mask project was a cow bone painted orange, I have my family dog Annie's bones in a glass tube (just little finger bones) and over the years I have acquired quite a few to my collection. I loved these two images and what great ideas to do with the antlers... however I am scared to paint mine, or add anything to them... or God forbid sell them. I have a few small plastic ones that I am thinking of practicing on. It seems faux taxidermy has really taken off, I see them everywhere, just think if I would cashed in on this trend in 2nd grade!

Ummmmm to me of course, just feeling very satisfied with myself and even though those huge waves of anxiety and the feeling of being overwhelmed have sometimes felt like they were drowning me, I have to remember and sometimes chant to myself that "This too shall pass." and that if I "just breathe" and "float" that all will be well. I am so lucky to be home and surrounded by love and support in my life. I am truly a very lucky girl and I am trying to handle it all with grace and patience. So soon starts the new chapter of my life and in my career at a new school and in a new community. Tuesday here I come, I will be there with bells on... even though they may be shaking nervously at first I hope to succeed in all I do here for the kids and school.

Barn Boozle!

This will be mine someday! I fell in love from the road and in lust from the front yard.

The wild native grasses and wildflowers were so so beautiful and inspiring. I love that. She just let it go but without letting her yard look like it was from "Gray Gardens"

Bed sold, pillows gone....

I am inspired to do this someday. Get a house... well duh but at least with a workable out building that I can have sales at once a month or twice ... or whatever fits me. It would be great practice for a store and as far as I understood it this is what these ladies did.

They call themselves the Apron Girls (yes they wear cute aprons) and they have barn sales. Seasonally, monthly it doesn't matter, it is a damn good idea. Get all your junk together. All your finds and treasures and call your girlfriends too that are into that sort of thing and have them bring their junk to your place. Set up shop. Make some lemonade and have your husbands do all the heavy lifting! I am in.

Across the River in Stillwater

The store was streamlined and colorful. Serious and playful. Organized and artistically chaotic.

This is the place to come for one of a kind stationary and invites, a pastry, a unique gift, a good coffee it has it all. We were there on a rainy day and it was the perfect place to walk into.

There were so many sweet and strange vignettes.

La Rue Marche'

In spending the day with Anna and exploring my new digs here in Hudson, I came across some very inspiring stores but none more inspiring then La Rue Marche, I don't even know what that means but I love it. The feeling when you walk in is so warm and eclectic and inspiring. The aesthetic is so clean, vintage, and kitsch. These are just a few shots I took of the shop, I can't begin to tell you of all the nooks that I found that were picture worthy. I am in envy of this place. Lets just say if I had a shop it would look a lot like this one.

The projects for Taste of Stillwater are coming along and I am managing to stay organized among all the other things happening here, moving, packing and making sure I am not packing away things that I need for the show or to finish for the show. I have already had to dig around in taped up boxes... not happening again. So silhouettes on fabric covered canvases, spray painted stencils and more silhouettes on canvas pillow covers. I am excited to see how these sell. On to the next project to fill up the space, reupholstered footstools and chairs!

What a surprise it was to get a message on Etsy from a recent buyer I had, she had mentioned me in her blog. I rushed over to check it out and ... what can I say? I am in love with her postings and blog... and HELLO?! Look at that beautiful little bambino! I am truly flattered that I was mentioned and featured in one of her postings. What an honor. I love connecting with fellow artists and looking in at others art filled lives. Here is what she posted and wrote about little old me. I first saw Minzer at Unique L.A., but the booth was overrun by people while I was there so I ordered a rope + fiber necklace later, which will be seen in a later post I'm sure. Imagine my delight to find these lovely extras in the package I received yesterday. You can't see great detail, but the felted ring is adorned with a little buffalo coin and that necklace? It stayed on all day. Baby nor weather nor wind bothered it! Accomplishment indeed.

My sister sent me a link to this new magazine, and I am so happy about it. Not since the hay days of Blueprint, and Home Companion have a really loved a magazine. Now Somerset home and studio that is a different kind of love but at $15 bucks a pop I am not that much in love. This particular mag doesn't come out here in the US until the 9th of June but I am anxious to see if it fills the void.... God I love magazines!

Free People/Urban Outfitters/Anthropologie inspires me everyday. I tend to gravitate more towards the free people aesthetic. These pictures did it for me today, how simple and guess what?! I have all the materials shown here! Surprise and a big TA DA. I will however be making a trip to the dollar store for the straw basket. But how simple for this summers show in the Midwest, I think the ladies will eat it up. So far for the decor I have these awesome pics to inspire me and the pom pom and button flowers for table .... not to mention some seriously awesome upcycled furniture.

California Dreaming

Well the last weekend of work has gone by and my to do list has shortened. I am keeping busy this week though with price points, signs, and some last minute sewing. The car needs a lube up, I need picture wire and some more wall hooks but here I am, all ready for another show in LA. I always get a bit nervous right before the show and I tend to convince myself that I will be sitting there with no sales and no positive feedback. It can be intimidating to be surrounded by artists that make their living with their art. Spending all day cultivating their craft and business models. I feel like I am perceived as a "crafter" with a glue gun, someone that does this as a hobby and because I do it in my spare time it makes me somewhat less then the others in the show. I do not have lines, and production assistants, or people that I pay to sit in my booth for me. I can compare it to the popular kids in the high school and feeling somewhat left out. It is all in my head of course and I have made some really amazing friends in this community that I know will always be in my art life, cheering me on and loving me ... glue gun or not. Of course those feelings in my head start to diminish with the first sale of the show and steadily disappear with every compliment or question that I get about my art. Overall I am feeling good about all the work I have gotten done and I am most positively looking forward to a weekend in LA, saying hi to the ocean, and being surround by creativity and energy for the weekend.

Fine Finland

I just love the images that I found on designsponge* yesterday from two artist that reside in Finland of all places. I love the worn, farmhouse look. And the bright colors are just perfect for a spring day. Windows open in the house and the smell of dirt and cut grass.

I love the chipped stairs.

Simple and uncluttered. I struggle with this all the time. I love things, but I am trying not to over clutter my life. Minimize.

OK I thought I was way ahead of schedule for this art show in LA... but as I lie there in bed last night trying to quiet my mind I couldn't help but be reminded about how much work I actually have left to do! So forgive me for the following to do list. I make them all the time but in doing that I end up with multiple lists and either forget them, don't have them with me when I need them, or just end up making so many and repeating myself that I get even more overwhelmed. I was proud of myself for getting a little done over my holiday.... but not enough!

Minnesota Bound.... and back again

Well I am back from a wonderful spring break in my homeland, Minnesota. Dear family, and loved ones. My kind of people. Snow in April. Deer in the backyard. Old Sears sewing machines. Good food and even better company.

I thought these vintage travel posters would be a great add to this post. I love the one below... that pretty much sums up a lot of girls I know... but with Minnesota girls they just had to add the boat part. Which has never been that important to me but maybe some girls have that interest.

I don't remember seeing any Indians at Lake Calhoun but hey vintage tourism at its best. I love uptown and got to spend a big chunk there, eating Thai, shopping at hippie stores and over priced trendy stores. Sipping on coffee, and munching on peanut butter cookies. Despite the snow storm in April the trip was a huge success and I felt that I got to spend time with everyone that I wanted to. Seeing college friends, new babies, and family was a big part of this trip and lots of driving too!

A little Re-do

Just a couple of little re-dos around the house. Just two little useless things that I should have put to the side knowing that I have a huge show coming up and two this summer to plan for. But no this is what I did on Friday night.... ummm ok. You weird procrastinating art girl.

This was a thrift find and I love it. Someone really took the time to make this unique picture of an old mill...out of tiny little beads!!! How strange, or maybe a machine did it, I really don't know much about it. It is a mystery. And above are two frames from Marybeth that I used for these great prints from Etsy. I could not find oval mats for the girls so I made some using leftover fabrics and some patience. I am really bad at math and measuring things out.

Paul Smith left school at the age of 15, a member of Beeston Road Club , his only ambition was to become a racing cyclist until his father hauled him off to work at a clothing warehouse. Smith had no real interest in his work during his first two years there except for the cycle journey to and from his home. A terrible cycling accident put an end to his cycling ambitions, and it was only then that Smith's career in fashion design began. Six months in hospital followed and during this time Smith made some new friends. After leaving the hospital he arranged to meet them all at a local pub that was popular with art students. It was then that Paul Smith knew he wanted to be part of this colourful world of ideas and excitement.

See what happens when you are thrown into time with artists... they open your eyes. I acquired the below tapestry from my friend Ken a couple of years ago. He works at a high end rug place in Beverly Hills and after this piece was mounted wrong they were going to throw it away. He saved it and gave it to me. I have kept it all this time knowing its value but also at the same time knowing that it isn't really my style. I thought to myself... "Oh I will save for a girls room." or "This will look cute... " I don't know I just always found an excuse to keep it. Well no more! I have decided to pass on the love and post it on Etsy and see what happens. I will not be selling it for what it is posted for on other sites but since it was free I will be making a profit. A big one hopefully.

This is the Paul Smith I have, it isn't mounted but it is in perfect condition. I saw on the website it is selling for 795.00 pounds... I am not sure what that is in dollars... but that is a lot. And for a piece that has been in my closet and has never been put up on display it is a no brainer.

I just love this. But I would not be able to pull it off in a desert house. I need to be in the country. But this is completely easy. Tissue paper, a few paper lanterns, and some circle garland. Color/Pattern... the pros and cons. I have been going over them in my head regarding my finds the other day. To paint them, do I try to refinish them. I really don't think they are of that much value and the coffee table that could have been is in pretty rough shape. I can't imagine sanding it all down and staining and puttying in the inlay flowers. To be honest I am not that crazy about the design in the first place. I have decided to do the two tiered table first... being the least important to me. After wandering around the house tonight trying to get piles ready to get my ass in gear for the shows coming up, I thought of a stencil idea. I have some really cool laser cut felt. I will post pics when the final product is ready. For now the wheels are a turning.

In the words of my Grandma Rose, what to do!? I acquired these from the next door neighbors trash. There was even more that I was tempted to take. She had a dresser that was in pretty bad shape and upon further inspection I noticed that the drawers were stuck and it had a broken leg. I think that piece would have been too much of a project for little old me. The carved coffee table though I almost passed up cause it was covered with junk. I love it. The two tiered table has a small crack on it and needs so be tightened up and the corner piece well I think that one will stay with me.... it will look perfect right inside the front door to the house. But what to do with it all? Bright paint? Images? Material? Patterns? I will have to troll the Internet for inspirations.... How about a painted Union Jack on one of them?

Weekend Savers Thriting

Decent finds at Savers this past weekend and a few to sell and try to make a buck on... the keepers well I think you can guess. I have two of the mirrors below. They are chipped and shabby, and perfection. Two I say! For $12.00. The other keeper I found is the blanket/lap cover below. I love the gradation of colors. Someone really did a quality job. Thank you lady... or guy. I like to think of you in a itchy recliner, rocking in a dimly lit living room watching a Sunday night program... I guess I am just envisioning my grandmothers living room and her basket of yarn. I remember sitting and rolling those skeins of yarn into balls for her.

There is something about a Polaroid picture. Ok so the song is catchy, but the feel of them, the weight. The stained edges, the marker labeling them on the fat end where your thumb went as you held and shook. Now a days there are apps and cute little business sized instant film cameras. I use both and I have to say.... everything and everyone looks a bit better to me through a Polaroid. I think the old soul in all of us comes out to play.

I think I was a photographer in a different life. I really took to the setting up and picturing, so to speak of each shot, and what it would look like before it came out. I am sure I would have gotten a few laughs from trying to set up the shot behind the camera and then run to the set up and get myself situated before the timer went off. Lets just say that I missed a few. Maybe one day I will be on a photo shoot with production assistants and hair and makeup, so I can include my face in some shots. How many times can I say shot? I don't know.... how many times? Isn't that a quote from Some Kind of Wonderful?

A tripod, a timer, some art, and me. After Anna left on Sunday I was still inspired to take some pics of my art. I swear no cable has made me so much more productive. I put on the tunes, drink that coffee, and shut off the phone and computer. One thing I have realized is that I need to work on my posture and as I sit here typing I can feel myself straighten up a bit... I need a reminder, maybe a new tattoo on the back of my hand, telling me to sit up straight. Other then that I find these photos to be very successful.

I love that someone, I like to think a sweet little old lady, took the time to latch this and made the owls look so charming and full of personality. Who knows maybe a serial killer made it, but now it is mine and I like it a lot.

Then for $7.99 and $8.99 I scored big time. I don't think that the artist is famous or that these would be worth more then what I paid for them. But I love them especially the ship with the anchors and stars. So cool.
